Municipal Sections and Local Communities

Municipality of Trikala (Trikkaion) is a Municipality of Thessaly Region, with 608.48 km2 and population 81.355 (2011).

The present form of the Municipality resulted, with the “Kallikratis Program” in 2010, from the extension of the original Municipality of Trikala and the merging of the pre-existing Municipalities of Paleokastron, Estiaiotida, Kallidendrou, Megala Kalybia, Faloreia, Paralithaion and Koziaka.

The new Municipality of Trikala is divided in 8 Municipal Sections, corresponding to the 8 ex Municipalities that merged to the new biggest Municipality

Every Municipal Section is divided into Local Communities, which correspond to the boroughs of the abolished Municipalities

Today’s Local Communities were autonomous villages or municipalities before the implementation of the “Kapodistrias” program in 1998

The Trikkaion Municipal Section is composed by the city of Trikala with approximately 67.000 inhabitants
