The Prefecture after a great fall concerning the population during the space of ten years 61-71(from 142.871 goes to 133.417) begins to recover showing a steady increase that is 134.207 in 1981, 136.295 in 1987 and 138.596 in 1991. After the last census, in 2011, Municipality of Trikala has 81.355 inhabitants
The great fall during the decade 61-71 is due to the great “agricultural way-out” having as target the foreign emigration to the countries of West Europe.(mostly Germany)

During the decade 71-81 there is a steadiness while at the same time there is a trend of returning home both from those who had a job abroad and from those who had a job in Greece.
It is really important to underline the fact that the greatest part of the population of the Prefecture lives and has a job in the town, where the real number overpasses 80.000 (almost the half of the Prefecture). At the same time the population in statistics is smaller; and this happens because of errors done in the procedure of census.
